We have headed out in search of fall colors. We’ve enjoyed fall foliage in the Smokey Mountains, but we have never been to New England when the leaves change colors in the fall. We are hoping to find them at their peak and follow them back south.

Hurricane Helene was just a tropical storm just entering the Gulf of Mexico when we set out. We expected to have plenty of time to travel out of its reach long before it caught up to us. Its unprecedented speed in strengthening and forward motion put us in a precarious situation, just two days into our journey. Should be try to outrun it? Should we hunker down and ride it out? We wasted a few hours considering our options, leaving us no choice at that point. We hunkered down just south of Chattanooga for a couple of days. As it turned out, the storm came right over us!! The first night we were parked under walnut tree. The tropical storm force winds threw walnuts at our camper all night. It sounded like someone was beating it with a baseball bat!

After a couple of days, we continued our travels, but the rains of Helene continued to follow us for two days and the clouds followed us for another. We have enjoyed seeing some color begin to show off as we move toward New England.
